Eating Away From Home

Whether it's a weekend excursion or cross-country flight, travel can challenge even the best of intentions. With some advanced planning you can enjoy the pleasures of travel and still maintain your nutritional goals.

On the Road
On day or weekend car trips, a cooler is a necessity. You can take along nutritious foods and snacks, and avoid fast food restaurants or convenience store foods along the way. In addition, you can carry healthy drinks such as tomato or orange juice, and avoid the empty calories of vending machine soft drinks. And don't forget the water. Drinking water when traveling not only keeps you hydrated, but also keeps hands and stomachs occupied!

In the Air
You don't have a choice of meals and snacks once you are on an airplane, so plan ahead for air travel. Many airlines now offer the choices of low-fat or vegetarian meals; however, these must be requested in advance of your travel. Place your meal request at the time your flight is booked, and confirm it when you check in.

Other things to consider when traveling by air:
  • You have the option to carry your own food on board. The airlines allow this, and it not only lets you eat healthfully, but also gives you control over when and how much you eat on the flight.
  • You can just say no. If you've eaten recently or will be eating on arrival at your destination, skip the airline meal.
  • When offered your choice of beverage on a flight, select fruit or vegetable juices and/or water.
