The History of Soup - A Timeline


Ancient Times Primitive man prepares the earliest known version of soup by dropping a red-hot stone into a pre-made liquid to heat it up.
Bronze Age The bronze cooking pot or cauldron is introduced.
1598 Andrew Boorde describes something reminiscent of the modern version of soup: "Pottage is made of the lyquor in whych flessche is sodden in, with puttying to chopped herbes and oatmeal and salt."
1600's A new, thinner type of pottage becomes fashionable. The French call it "soupe" from the practice of placing a "sop" of bread at the bottom of pottage bowls to soak up the juices.
1772 Captain Cook takes stock cubes, or "portable soup", on his world voyage.
1765 Monsieur Boulanger opens his famous soup shop in Paris
1810 Peter Durand, a London merchant, invents the "tin canister" for preserving food.
1830's Canned goods go on general sale.
1858 Ezra Warner patents the can opener. Prior to the can opener, a hammer and chisel were used to open cans, which was not only messy, but dangerous as well.
1873 Amanda Theodosia Jones invents vacuum-packed canning, revolutionizing the food production industry and canned soup manufacturing.
1897 The Joseph Campbell Company develops a formula for condensed soups. The five original varieties include: Tomato, Consommé, Vegetable, Chicken and Oxtail.
1900
The Joseph Campbell Company's soups win the Gold Medallion for excellence at the Paris Exposition. To this day, the medallion appears on Campbell's Soup labels.
1928 The first wheel can opener, which grips the seam of the can, is advertised in the Sears, Roebuck catalogue.
1934 Campbell's Soup adds Chicken Noodle to its line-up.
1962 Andy Warhol paints his famous Campbell's Soup cans.
1964 In response to consumers' changing attitudes towards health and nutrition, the first line of low-salt soups is introduced.
1970 To save busy Americans time in the kitchen, Campbell's debuts Chunky Ready-to-Serve soups.
1976 The first Souper Salad franchise opens in Boston, one of a string of restaurant chains offering salad and soup bars for health-conscious consumers.
1980 The soup restaurant market is booming, offering customers an array of hearty soups that serve as main meals.
1995 The "Soup Nazi" episode of a famous sitcom airs and soup cafes begin popping up in cities all over the country, glamorizing soup as a hearty, satisfying meal.
1998 Campbell Company of Canada comes to the aid of a time-crunched and hungry public by making soup and meal preparation easier than ever with: Campbell's Ready to Serve Tomato soup, Campbell's Soup to Go microwaveable soups, Swanson seasoned chicken broths
2000 Soup is dubbed a dieter's "Secret Weapon" by Dr. Barbara Rolls a leading nutrition researcher. Rolls shows that soup, and other low energy-dense foods, induce satiety with fewer calories. Campbell's promotes more than 30 soup varieties that contain fewer than 125 calories and 3 grams of fat or less per serving as a great way to eat smart.
2003 Campbell's Gardennay soups are introduced to the Canadian market.
2005 Campbell's Soup At Hand is launched in Canada.
